Vortex Dynamics within the BCS Theory

چکیده
Based on the BCS theory we outline a conventional path integral derivation of the transverse force and the friction for a vortex in a superconductor. The derivation is valid in both clean and dirty limits at both zero and finite temperatures. The transverse force is found to be precisely as what has been obtained by Ao and Thouless using the Berry’s phase method. The friction is essentially the same as the Bardeen and Stephen’s result. 1

Quantum Dynamics of Topological Singularities: Feynman’s Influence Functional Approach
Starting from the microscopic theory of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) for the fermionic superfluids, we show that the vortex dynamics can be followed naturally by extending Feynman’s influence functional approach to incorporate the transverse force. There is a striking mutual independence of the transverse and longitudinal influences: The former has the topological origin and is insensitive t...
متن کاملNuclear Superconductivity in Compact Stars: Bcs Theory and Beyond
This chapter provides a review of microscopic theories of pairing in nuclear systems and neutron stars. Special attention is given to the mean-field BCS theory and its extensions to include effects of polarization of the medium and retardation of the interactions. Superfluidity in nuclear systems that exhibit isospin asymmetry is studied. We further address the crossover from the weak-coupling ...
متن کاملFrom Effective Bcs Action to Vortex Dynamics
The topological term in the effective action for the electrically neutral BCS system is discussed. It is applied for the calculation of the transverse force acting on the vortex in the limit of the smooth vor-tex core and vanishing interlevel distance in the vortex core. The controversy between the topological terms in cond-mat/9703124 and cond-mat/9411047 is resolved.

متن کاملContrasting confinement in superQCD and superconductors
The vacuum of supersymmetric gauge theories (SQCD) with N = 2 softly broken to N = 1 resembles that of a BCS superconductor in that it has a condensate which collimates flux into vortices, leading to confinement. We embed the SQCD vortex into the BCS theory by identifying the N = 1 vector multiplet mass and lightest massive chiral multiplet mass with the Fermi velocity divided by the London pen...
